Vive l'amour, or not? Trip to Europe brings hope for a proposal
Tuesday
Randy and I had been dating for a little over a year when the opportunity to visit Europe came along. I knew I had to convince him to go.

Now we're both so glad that I did, because it became a trip that both of us will remember for the rest of our lives.

I always had dreamed about visiting Europe: seeing the Eiffel Tower, drinking wine in a little café in Paris, visiting the historic sites in Rome. Europe held no such appeal for Randy Cook, however; in fact, when I first heard about this tour that we could join, he was undeniably reluctant to go.

The trip was being offered through the high school where Randy used to teach. It was an educational trip for students, and chaperones were needed. I thought that Randy and I would make ideal chaperones.

I just had to make Randy see it the way I did.

When I first told Randy how wonderful it would be if we went on the trip, I don't think he knew how serious I was about going. I kept at it, though, and after much persuading, hints and nudges, I managed to convince him -- as he says I do so well. Randy and I signed up for the trip that in eight days, this past summer, was to make stops in Italy and France.

Randy and I had talked long before the trip about getting married. We'd even gone ring shopping a few months prior to deciding on the trip, and I had picked out the ring that I wanted (I wasn't about to leave that up to chance).

So, I must admit, the thought did cross my mind occasionally that Europe would be the perfect place for a marriage proposal. I didn't know for sure if or when it would happen, though, so I tried -- "tried" being the key word -- not to think about it too much.

The time for the trip came, and our group started out with a stop in Rome. We took in the Coliseum and the Roman Forum. We went to the Vatican, where we saw the Sistine Chapel. All the while, though, Randy made no proposal of marriage.

The group next traveled to Florence, where we spent a day shopping. (The adults also tried some wine, a staple in Italy.) As for a marriage proposal from Randy -- well, there still was nothing.

Our last two days were spent in Paris, which is arguably the most romantic city in the world. I can't deny that I thought this would be the absolute best place to propose marriage, but what did I know?

The first day passed, but our itinerary brought two romantic offerings for the last day: a river cruise on the Seine, through the heart of the city, and a visit to the Eiffel Tower, where we would go up to the top and look out over the City of Lights.

Unfortunately, the weather was not too conducive to a romantic marriage proposal. It started raining on our river cruise, and by that time, I pretty much had quit thinking that a proposal was going to happen on the trip, which Randy hadn't been all that keen on taking in the first place.

I have to say that I wasn't downcast about it, and even if I had been, the rain created a beautiful double rainbow over the Eiffel Tower that would have dispelled such feelings. The rainbow also helped to get my mind off the chances for a proposal.

After the cruise, Randy and I stood in line to take the elevator to the top of the tower. It had become cold and rainy, a sharp contrast to the 100-degree heat that we had survived in Rome and Florence. I was freezing, and I had become apprehensive about going to the top of the tower, but I knew I had to because it was the chance of a lifetime.

By the time our group got to the top of the Eiffel Tower, it was dark, and the wind was blowing full force. That did not help my uneasiness about being 905 feet above the ground. I spent about two minutes up top -- enough time to snap a few pictures and take in the view -- and I was done, ready to go down.

Then, when Randy and I got to the bottom, it happened. He took my hand and led me over to one of the benches under the tower. He explained that he had wanted to do this at the top, but he knew how frightened I was up there, so he thought it would be better to wait.

I was a little confused, because I still was calming down from being up so high in such strong winds. Then Randy got down on one knee, and I finally understood what was happening.

I had pictured being proposed to here and there on our trip, but now I couldn't believe it was happening. I had never imagined that Randy would propose to me in Paris under the Eiffel Tower. But there we were: Randy asked me to be his best friend forever, I said "Yes!" and -- voilà -- we were engaged.

So now you can see why Randy and I will never forget our trip to Europe. Not only did we experience the journey of a lifetime together, but now I always will have a special place in my heart for Paris, the city where the journey of the rest of our life together began.
